"LEGO Monster Fighters Face-Off" - 2011 |
|
After Knights Kingdom drew to a close, I started getting picked up to do a lot more spot illustrations for LEGO package art.
The above illustration went on the back of LEGO's short-lived Monster Fighters line, although you might not recognize it; on the final packaging they desaturated it down to a sepia-toned blotch for reasons I can't imagine. (I'm not even completely sure who "they" were, in this case; I got the impression that LEGO was experimenting with outside package design agencies during the year when this line was in production.) |

LEGO Jurassic World T-Rex inset - 2014 |
|
I'm not sure we've ever done a hybrid quite like this one, before or since - it's a LEGO T-Rex with model with the Jurassic Park movie T-Rex's surface texturing. She appeared in the upper corner of all the LEGO Jurassic World box art and instruction books. |

LEGO Jurassic World in-box comic |
|
LEGO Jurassic World also got an in-box comic, which is becoming a more and more common feature of LEGO licensed IPs nowadays.
While I was drawing the comic, I had to cover up all the Indominus Rexes with fake T-Rexes instead, in case anyone casually opened the development files we were sending back and forth. The existence of Indominus Rex was a big secret that we had to keep under wraps until the movie came out. |

LEGO DC Super Heroes
"Dawn of Justice" Batman and Superman - 2015 |

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes
Scuba Iron Man and Captain America inset - 2015 |
|
I've done more of these superhero portrait insets than I can count over the last four years. I'm not sure whether I've racked up more box corners than Paul Lee yet, but I'm sure I'm giving him a run for his money. |

LEGO DC Super Heroes 76025 Green Lantern vs. Sinestro in-box comics - 2014 |
|
Along with the insets came several years' worth of comics. In the early days, I'd take them to color myself, like in the Green Lantern comic above, but now I just focus on the pencil layouts and hand them off to freelancers for inks and color. |

Matte Paintings for Mars Mission / Mars Alien Hive |
|
Some of my earliest box art that made it into production were matte backgrounds for the Mars Mission playtheme in 2007. As a darker reboot of the Life on Mars theme of 2001, LEGO was looking for a more menacing and mysterious treatment of the Martian landscape, broken up into convenient Photoshop image elements for company reuse as the line evolved with the Alien Hive storyline in 2008. |
